What is there to do when you are on a Caribbean island and practically surrounded by beaches? If you’re a perfectly rational human being, then the ideal answer would be to throw off those shoes and go crazy in the water.

In San Juan, Puerto Rico, there’s so much room for beach adventures. For one, the tropical climate is on your side. The average annual temperature is 82 F (28 C) and it almost never goes below 64 F or above 97 F. With a great weather, it’s almost impossible not to enjoy San Juan’s clear waters and white sand.

Isla Verde is the premier beach destination in San Juan. Stretching for miles along the city coastline, Isla Verde Beach lies in front of numerous luxury hotels, condominiums, restaurants, clubs, guesthouses, upscale apartments, parks, and even a cemetery.

Although you can still read or take a nap here, this beach is not your ideal location if you’re looking for a tranquil and deserted getaway. There’s not much crowd on weekdays but people come in droves during the weekends and Isla Verde becomes a hub of water activities. The surf is good enough for body surfing or you can venture further into the sea with parasailing, jetskiing, and water skiing. Nearby sports shops offer equipment for rent. Beachfront hotels and resorts in Isla Verde also feature various facilities for water sports.

Fishing is another popular water sport in San Juan. Most anglers here practice the catch-and-release system though so the farthest you can get for a souvenir catch is a picture of the fish. A common style here is deep sea fishing. The most abundant species in these parts of the Caribbean are allison tuna, sailfish, wahoo, and mackerel. Thanks to the island’s tropical climate, fishing is good all year you have more chances of catching tuna, dolphin, wahoo, sailfish and other species during the months of October to early March.

San Juan has a lot of marine charters that offer a half-day or full day fishing trip. Boats often range from 32-50 feet and can take in about six passengers along with two to four fishing crew. Deep water is close to shore so you can usually start fishing within half an hour of leaving port. A half-day tour package can cost $480-$500, a six-hour trip ranges from $650-$700, and a whole day of fishing costs anywhere from $850 to $1,000. These fees are already inclusive of fishing equipment, beverages, and services of captain and mate.

For those who would rather stay out of deep waters but still want a great fishing experience, light tackle fishing in the bays and lagoons is a good alternative. There are marine charters as well that offer smaller boats, around 16-18 feet, for a half-day or full day trip.

Scuba diving and snorkeling are must-do activities as well in Puerto Rico. The visibility is at least 60 to 75 feet in areas nearer to the beach but it can be up to 100 feet offshore. Diving sites in San Juan feature awe-inspiring marine diversity and picturesque geographical formations. Other impressive dive sites are 50 miles west of Mayaguez, near Desecheo Island off Rincon, off Mona Island, and off Culebra and Vieques. There’s no reason to panic even if you’re a newbie in diving. Some hotels and resorts offer diving lessons for beginners. As for snorkeling, the shallow reefs in San Juan are more than enough to dazzle you with awesome underwater scenery. A good snorkeling location is in the bay marina near the Caribe Hilton hotel.

For kids, water sports are adventurous and fun filled. But safety has to be given first priority. All kids should compulsorily wear life jackets, even if kids know how to swim. All boats and rafts should also carry extra life jackets, whistle and lifebuoys. Water sports need to be accompanies by an adult who must know how to swim, preferable accompanied by an attentive lifeguard. He should also know what to do during times of emergency and A B Cs of giving first aid. Water sports should always be carried out, when the climate is pleasant. If the climate is sunny, do apply sun screen cream to protect yourself from radiations.

There are different kinds of water sports for children, some are for pleasure and some are very adventurous and exciting. Let’s start with a simple water sport like boating, which is very much enjoyable. In most of the kids and youths camps you’ll find boating and canoing. Don’t forget to carry your life jackets while you get into the boat. Always you need to follow what your instructor or guide says. Sailing is adventurous when the wind is good. Once you have enough practice, you can begin to participate in your local sailing competitions! If you want an adventurous water sport, then sailing has to be your first choice! Most nature loving kids will choose scuba diving, where kids will be able to learn more about the fascinating world of animals and it also helps them to develop empathy towards animals. If you want to swim with fishes, explore the corals and admire the color of blue, then scuba diving is the best. Scuba diving is also an excellent exercise.

Surfing is an excellent exercise and a superb family sport. Surfing is also a great outdoor sport during a sunny day or during summers. Swimming is the most favorite sport for many children and as well as for adults, it doesn’t matter if you swim in a lake, ocean, river, pool or with any competitive swimmers or friends; swimming is always enjoyable. But make sure the water is clean. If you are a beginner or a learner, then stay away from the depth. Wear goggles, ear plugs and a swim cap while swimming and you need to avoid swimming after heavy food. Apart from these water sports, you can even play water basketball and volleyball which is even more fun and exciting.

Are you a water enthusiast? Do you need a vacation? Does sailing, skiing and surfing sound like the perfect vacation? If so, you should look into adventure holidays. Remove yourself from the demands of everyday life and enjoy the desperately needed vacation.

For those who love water sports, a vacation to you means sandy beaches, a warm climate and definitely an ocean nearby. Here are several great hot spots from which you can choose for a terrific adventure getaway.

The tropical Island of St. Lucia is a dream vacation for those you love sailing. You can sail the western coastline all the way to Rodney Bay and enjoy Pigeon Island National Park and, especially, its beautiful beach. At night, you will find a wide selection of restaurants and bars where you can take pleasure in the cocktails and a delicious meal.

Then, head off to Soufrière where you can visit the Botanical Gardens, Diamond Falls, Volcano and mineral baths. You can then make your way to the deserted beach of Ansa Cochon designed specifically for snorkeling.

Your afternoon can be spent at the Jalousie Plantation Resort, or simply continue snorkeling at the Coral Gardenas. Then, a romantic night under the stars awaits you at the famous Pitons. Or, you can experience the natural wonders and snorkeling of St. Lucia. However, don’t miss out on the Marigo before dark where you can dine at your choice of fantastic restaurants and take in the magnificent view of the Caribbean.

Barbados, known as the “soupbowl” at Bathsheba, attracts water sports enthusiasts from all over, including those top at their sport who spend time here training. As they do, you will appreciate the warm water, friendly atmosphere and uncrowded waves of the ocean. Bathsheba is famous for its thundering barrels and fast walls, and locals and visiting surfers have enjoyed the surfing hear for years. This fishing village turns into a high activity hot spot in November when the waves are at their prime and the small village hosts the International Surfing Championship. Surfers typically rent local bay houses and socialize with the local residents, enjoying the friendly atmosphere when not enjoying the waves.

If you water skiing is your passion, you should head over to Ski Paradise in Acapulco, Mexico or to Torrevieja and Murcia in Spain. Water Ski Magazine rated it one of the best ski sites in the world. Regardless of your skill level, you will have a great time at Ski Paradise. It is the ultimate sports vacation and offers great accommodations and terrific instructors if you need to improve your skills. Ski Paradise also offers tennis, sport fishing and golf. At night, you can also experience the vibrant night life of the area and fabulous food.

These are only a few of the top hot sports for those seeking some water sport adventure. There are surely more places to enjoy sailing, surfing and skiing. But, whether you opt for the West coast, East coast or in between, you can find affordable, fun holidays to enjoy your favorite water sports!

Being especially passionate about Torrevieja and Spain, Robert Carlton has been publishing several newsletters on the subject. His abstracts on Torrevieja and Murcia can be discovered on his web publications.

White Water Rafting is a leisure sport indulged in by daring individuals, where many persons occupy a raft which is then steered over a rapid moving water body.

For individuals who are adventurous by nature and are out looking for a unique activity for their next vacation, White Water Rafting is the name of the game. It’s got the movement, it’s got the thrill, it’s like a roller-coaster ride with Nature and it’s in the great outdoors. What more could any adventure-lover ask for?

The most significant feature of white water rafting is to make certain that you are piloted down the stream or river by a professional escort, who is aware of the water and also knows how to maneuver the boat.

These professionals are known as White Water Rescue or Swift-Water technicians and are qualified in C.P.R, advanced first aid and other general rescue procedures. Though white water rafting is a safe and a popular sport and all the precautions like life vests and helmets are compulsory attire, there is still a dearth of trained professionals in this field and it is always safer to have a qualified professional if something untoward should happen.

White water rafting is a sport which is enjoyed by the able bodied and people with disabilities alike. It is no longer a rare sight to see people with special needs or disabilities enjoying the sport with normal people and the only precaution that needs to be taken is that the attire is comfortable and convenient to allow you free movement. Why you might even see a family where the grandparents enjoy the thrill of the rapids as much as their grand-kids do.

Rafting trips depend on the kind of amenities organizers provide along with how long the trip is, how well equipped and well qualified the guide, the rate per person and gratuity and rent for the equipment. It is always recommended to inquire about all these factors before finalizing the trip to avoid any hassles later on. Discounts are offered to groups, students and corporates, so if the number of people in a group is high it is always worthwhile inquiring about it.

People who are great white water enthusiasts prefer a multi-day trip and carry their gear for the night with them and sleep on the embankment while others prefer trips that start out in the mornings and have them back at their base camps or vehicles in the evening.

It is always better to plan a white water rafting trip when the weather is at its best and that depends entirely on the country you choose to go to. One can always find out the details about the rain, snowfall, heat and the release of water from the lakes or weir.

If it is not possible to get this information on your own then the best option would be to go by the advice of the organizers of the trip. Just make sure you carry clothes appropriate for the season.

The Republic of Panama has always been known for its fishing, tropical islands and beautiful beaches. It took about 3 million years for the Republic of Panama to emerge as it was a vast archipelago of volcanic islands. Due to volcanic activities during that period, Panama became an isthmus with over 1,500 islands, 2,988 kilometers of coast and a total of 480 rivers that empty their waters into the ocean. Once this phenomenon was over, there was a reduction on genetic mixing among different types of fish quarry and a reduction of fish migration in between the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean.

Archaeologists have proven that people has been living in the Republic of Panama for at least 11,000 years. The first inhabitants of the Republic of Panama lived on the Pacific Ocean and practiced fishing as their main occupation in 1500 B.C. and their ancient fishing techniques are still being used today! Due to the tremendous importance that fish had in the lives of Isthmians, they decided to name the Isthmus “Panama” as the word means “abundance of fish”.

SPORT FISHING IN THE GULF OF PANAMA

The Gulf of Panama is where Panama City is located. It extends to approximately 12,000 square miles in size and counts with over 100 volcanic spectacular islands including the famous Pear Islands. Sport fishing in the Gulf of Panama could be a unique angling experience as the underwater geography in this fairly large area is relatively shallow and well geographically positioned. This makes it special for a wide variety of sea life to immigrate and breed in the extensive Panamanian gulf waters.

When it’s about offshore sport fishing trips in the Gulf of Panama you can expect some of the best sport fishing in the world. As a matter of fact, Darien’s Bahia Piñas has more International Game Fish Association world records broken than any where else in the world.

In the Gulf of Panama you will find the presence of a great number of game fish species “pelagic gamefish / demersal gamefish” among others.

The Republic of Panama has fishing opportunities all year round. However, there is not a bad season for fishing but different types of fish during each season. In between the months of late May thru December sport fishing opportunities will most likely be pelagic gamefish “Barracudas, Amberjacks, Roosterfish and Sierras among others” with off season chances on catching big game slope fish
“larger groupers, sappers, jacks, pompanos and corvine among others”.

During our dry season (Jan – May), the Republic of Panama experiences some changes that are convenient for deep sea sport fishing charters in the Gulf of Panama. First off, a southern Pacific strong cold saltwater current know as the “Humboldt” starts to move up north from South America bordering the Colombian Pacific coastline into Panama’s famous Tuna Coast or Azuero Peninsula “Pedasi” and also the Gulf of Panama’s “Pearl Islands and Piñas Bay”.

Furthermore, the Panama Gulf starts to receive strong north winds from Panama’s Atlantic coast creating what oceanographers call the “Panama Current”. A constant strong north wind blows the surface of the Panamanian Gulf waters creating a vertical current from down under. Water from the surface of the ocean gets blown miles offshore making a necessity for deep cold water (62-69 F) to move in replacing it. This phenomenon causes slope fish or bottom fish to migrate from the continental slope drop-off into the Gulf of Panama. When the cold nutrient rich offshore waters emerge to a certain depth, sunlight makes a reaction where tons of plankton supplies are spread all over the Gulf of Panama making it special for any type of game fish or quarry to immigrate to this area. While this period is in process, the opportunities to catch deep sea big game fish, shelf demersal or slope gamefish are extraordinary once you are on a fly fishing or regular fishing charter with panamacruise.com.pa around the Gulf of Panama.

The sport fishing phenomenon lasts for about 1 month to 1 ½ months depending on the winds. This wind effect is only experienced in the gulf area as else where in Panama’s Pacific Coast is blocked by mountains. However, the cold water temperature stays while the Humboldt Current flows around the whole Pacific coast of the Republic of Panama making it hard for surfers and
people to swim as the beaches gets filled with gelly-fish. Water temperature in Panama changes drastically during the year. The Republic of Panama has warm waters (82-84F) for 8-10 months in between (May-December) and the cold water from the vertical current (62-69F) for 2-3 months in between (December-May) once a year.

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of riding a wave. It’s almost impossible to visit the ocean without at least being intrigued by the art of surfing. The easiest introduction to surfing is through bodyboarding. Bodyboards can be found in many stores and near the beach it’s not hard to find rental bodyboards.

THE LEARNING CURVE FOR BEGINNERS IS VERY LOW

First timers can go out and have fun their very first time. Even if all you are doing is riding the “whitewash” from a wave that has already broken, the sensation of being propelled towards the shore can be exhilarating in and of itself for someone who is new to the ocean.

“NATURAL” FORM OF EXERCISE

Physical activity gets the blood flowing. Being outdoors, interacting with nature and harnessing its power and directing it with your own strength to travel at light speed across the ocean is much more fulfilling than working out in a gym or swimming in a pool.

YOU SET YOUR OWN LIMITS

Bodyboarding can be as challenging of a water sport as you want to make it. You may be comfortable riding soft, easy waves or you may want to push your limits by riding larger, more powerful waves. You may be happy enjoying the rush of surfing full speed across a long, lined up wave or you may want to push your own limits by performing critical direction changes or acrobatic maneuvers either on the wave or by using its force to project you into the air above the wave.

NEGATIVE IONS

The crashing surf creates negative ions in the air. Negative ions increase blood flow to the brain, which can in turn give you an energy boost, enhance your mood, and help relieve stress.

CLEANSING OF THE MIND

When you are riding waves, your body reacts to your mind and your mind is focused only on the ocean. The troubles of everyday life are momentarily forgotten and can help clear the mind and reduce stress.

So what are you waiting for? If you are looking for a water sport with lower cost and easier learning curve than surfing then bodyboarding may be right for you. Beg for, borrow, rent (but don’t steal) bodyboard and go catch some waves!

Bodyboarding is a “complete” surfing water sport. It requires the use of your whole body, though depending on your level of riding you may need to be more aware of and condition different muscle groups.

The leg muscles are the first group you will want to condition. Used for swimming from shore out to where the waves break, paddling into waves, and also as leverage for turning while riding the waves. Leg positioning and movement during high performance bodyboarding tricks is also used to control your momentum. No leg strength or stamina makes for a very short surf session.

I am including the feet here because sometimes you may get foot cramps when swimming. In my experience this is usually an effect of either your bodyboarding fins not fitting properly or leg muscles tightening up from overuse /exhaustion which in turn pulls on the muscles in your feet.

The arms are typically used for paddling, though not as exclusively as with traditional surfing. Personally, I use arm paddling primarily to give the legs a rest from kicking during extended “paddle outs” or for extra boosts of speed when paddling for a wave. Arm strength will also be needed for performing advanced bodyboarding maneuvers that are exclusive to this water sport since you must hold on to your board as you flip, twist, spin—sometimes all at the same time–and fall out of the sky when doing aerial moves.

Since for most riders the majority of the time will be spent lying with the stomach on the bodyboard, the “ab” muscles must be able to support and direct the weight of your body. Also, when doing advanced maneuvers like airs, rolls, ARS’s, and flips you will be freefalling onto your stomach. Strong abdominal muscles will help keep the wind from getting knocked out of you and the quick recovery you will make insures that you will not lose speed upon impact.

Weak stomach muscles will also put extra responsibility on the back muscles to absorb the impact of hard landings. If you find you have recurring back pain after doing advanced bodyboarding moves, I can tell you first hand that improving your ab strength may likely reduce or eliminate your back problems.

This brings us to the last group of muscles I will talk about…the back muscles. You should have a strong back regardless of your skill level, but advanced moves require a lot of twisting, arcing, and body english that can only be accomplished with a strong, flexible back.

So now that know what muscles to condition for this water sport, it’s time to start enjoying the wide world of surfing. Grab a board and fins, and go out and have a great bodyboarding session. Enjoy!
